2016 Transformative Knowledge Workshop, New Delhi

2016 Transformative Knowledge Workshop, New Delhi

The third Transformative Knowledge Workshop took place between 5 and 8 November 2016, at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Taking place almost one year into the TKNs’ activities, the workshop focused on understanding the early stages of the transformative change process and exploring the theories of change underpinning the TKNs. It was also a moment to deepen connections between the TKN projects and partners and to build skills in managing complex projects.

For each of the programme’s annual Transformative Knowledge Workshops, we aim to go to a location that has undergone or is undergoing deep social change. India has seen profound transformations over the decades, and is today home to a panoply of social movements and activist organizations working to change socio-ecological relationships at various levels around the country. With all three Transformative Knowledge Networks (TKNs) having partners in India, New Delhi provided an ideal location for TKN representatives to meet together with other community members who had been involved in the seed grants (funded in 2014) or in the shortlisted TKN proposals.

The workshop took place during an ‘extreme’ pollution peak in New Delhi, which threw into sharp relief the need for urgent action to bring about transformations towards sustainability. The meeting provided opportunities to learn from Indian grassroots initiatives working on social transformations, and programme members were joined by a number of representatives from social movements or civil society for a public seminar on 7 November:

Contributors to the recently published World Social Science Report 2016, “Challenging Inequalities: Pathways to a Just World” also joined the meeting on 7 November in sessions focusing on the intersection between the themes of the Report and the T2S programme: inequalities, transformational change and sustainability.
